Opportunities for New Students

As you enter NC State, you may be looking for ways to get more comfortable with the campus, meet other students, boost your resume, and get better grades. One of the easiest ways to accomplish these goals is to get involved on campus with student organizations, academic research, and career opportunities.

Remember these tips as you start thinking about what opportunities you want to take advantage of at NC State!

1. Choose opportunities that interest you.
2. Don't be afraid to try something new.
3. Find a balance.
4. Don't take on all new activities at once.
5. Check out groups - attending a meeting doesn't commit you to join.

Student Organizations Resource Center (SORC)
If you are interested in learning about the hundreds of student organizations that await at NC State, the Student Organizations Resource Center (SORC) is the right place to start looking! With a searchable database of organizations, as well as a staff that can assist you in learning more about involvement at NC State and which organization(s) may be right for you, SORC is your greatest asset on campus. From Greek to community service and faith-based organizations, SORC is a clearinghouse for information about how you can get involved, enhance your collegiate experience, and make new friends throughout the process.

Wolfpack Welcome Week (WWW)
Wolfpack Welcome Week (WWW) is a great tradition at NC State that takes place in August the week before the fall semester starts. It’s your time to get acquainted with your new home, to make new friends and to explore all the exciting ways to learn, in and outside of class. Take a look at the website, check out all our links and you'll be saying WOW! Be sure to check out "NC State 'Hearts' Transfers", a program that is meant to welcome transfer students to the Wolfpack and make sure you have a t-shirt to start your Wolfpack collection! You have the opportunity to socialize and participate in our Transfer Swag Swap, where you can bring in t-shirts or gear from your old school to donate and swap it for a new NC State t-shirt, and if you don’t have swag to swap, no problem!

Build your Resume and Grow Professionally

Cooperative Education (Co-op)
Would you like to know what its like to be on the frontline of your chosen profession? Cooperative Education at NC State allows you to work for multiple terms in a relevant occupation - learning firsthand what challenges professionals in your chosen field face and how your skills might best fit in. Not only do you get to evaluate whether a career is right for you, but this is also a great way for potential employers to get to know you. Cooperative Education at NC State is one of the largest Co-op programs in the nation, with more than 1,000 work rotations a year placed in a wide variety of fields with employers across America!

University Career Center
Figuring out what to do after college can be intimidating, but planning early and getting help can make all the difference. The University Career Center counselors use expertise drawn from working with professionals in your field, faculty, staff and students to give you the knowledge, insight and resources you need to get you moving and keep you going in the right direction.We know you're motivated to find career opportunities following college - we share your excitement and can help you get there successfully by making the steps more manageable.

Undergraduate Research
As a research-intensive institution NC State encourages each student to participate in undergraduate research on-campus. The Office of Undergraduate Research supports and assists you in creating experiences that promote excellent undergraduate research opportunities in mentored research experiences with NC State faculty on a national and international scale. No matter your major or interests, the Office of Undergraduate Research can work with you to discover what opportunities are available for research!

Transfer Students: Take Advantage of Resources Specifically for You

PackTransfers
PackTransfers is a student-run organization for transfer students run by transfer students. Their goal is to assist you in your transition to NC State by connecting you to other transfer students, sponsoring events and programs geared specifically toward the transfer community, and providing you an opportunity to get involved at NC State from the start! NC State and the PackTransfers know students are more successful and happier when they are involved and have other students to share experiences with, so join PackTransfers to learn more about what they can offer you. USC 301: Transfer Student Success Course
USC 301 is a one-credit hour course designed to assist new transfer students in making an effective transition to the rigors of a large research university. The course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to address the academic and personal challenges as well as other transitional issues that may impact your progress toward your degree. Classroom discussions, small group work, guided tours, faculty mentors and introduction to resources, services and opportunities are all vital components of this course. Topics include: academic adjustment, social adjustment, campus resources, major and career exploration, policies and procedures, financial aid, and technology. USC 301 is restricted to first and second semester transfer students, so you want to sign for the course in you first or second semester at State. You cannot receive credit for both USC 301 and ALS 303 (Agriculture and Life Sciences) or T 101 (Textiles).

Veteran Affairs
Veteran Affairs at NC State provides guidance and assistance to NC State students and families who have served or are currently serving. Information about the G.I. Bill, enrollment procedures, as well as residency are available by visiting the Veteran Affairs website. Do not forget to take advantage of NCSU Student Veterans, a student-led group for veterans, as well as USC 120, a course to help military veteran/service members transition into the academic environment and campus community. Topics include academic success skills, academic culture, campus resources and student services.
